Sports and Outdoor Recreation Council

At the Reykjavík City Council meeting on January 7, 2025, it was agreed to establish the Culture and Sports Council, to oversee the tasks of the Department of Culture & Tourism and the Department of Sports & Leisure, with the exception of tourism, which is transferred to the City Executive Council.

Sports and Outdoor Recreation Council

At its June 2, 2026, meeting, the City Council approved changes to the name and responsibilities of the Culture and Sports Council.

The council will carry out its duties in accordance with the current bylaws of Reykjavík City's Culture and Sports Council, except for cultural affairs, which will transfer to the newly established Culture Council. The Presidium has been tasked with drafting amendments to the council's bylaws in consultation with the Department of Culture & Sports, to be submitted for approval at the City Council's first meeting in September. Until the new charter is adopted, the council will operate under the Culture and Sports Council's existing charter.

TheCulture & Sports Council typically holds two meetings monthly, which take place at Borgartún 12-14.

Bjarni Guðjónsson serves as chair of the council.

Helga Björnsdóttir serves as secretary to the council.
